"Hopefully I'll be taking the plunge 100% into flipping this year. So much to learn, sometimes you just gotta dive in and hold your breathe."

Thomas Powell replied to Philip McIntosh's discussion Sharing of Moodle Mathematics Question Banks Anyone? in the group Mathematics
"So many possibilities! My school uses Moodle yet I never had the chance to pursue using it for testing. This coming year I'm planning to try a flipped classroom which I'm considering using Moodle as the vehicle to navigate with. I wonder…"

Thomas Powell replied to Jackie Remis's discussion How to help parents understand the Flipped Classroom in the group Mathematics
"Parent's get nervous if they don't see a books with linear order to it. Something tangible gives them a sense of security, as if it's the complete course in a neat little package... Just like Math in general, no? I suggest an…"

Thomas Powell commented on Steve Hegwood's group First Time Flippers
"So I've been fiddling with a flipping platform called Sophia. Does anyone have any feedback on it. I did manage to upload a lesson, but then got bogged down with end-of year issues. I'm hoping to post a few review lessons (by student…"

Thomas Powell commented on Steve Hegwood's group First Time Flippers
"I noticed the comments have slowed down noticeably since the Christmas break. It makes sense, since what kind of fool would decide to introduce flipping at this point in the school year!  You're looking at him. I have dabbled first with a…"

After teaching for 24 years, I'm still loving it. And even though I'm lucky to be in a high school with extremely motivated kids, I've realized that the factory model of education is outdated. Schools used to be the place to go to get information, to learn things. Now schools seem to do more of the social role of learning than the intellectual... Okay, that's just a generalization. Either way, teaching needs to be updated to better suit the needs of the learners.I don't foresee elimination of the actual buildings, and attendance requirements - Parents have to work. But classrooms need to change, and teaching has to keep pace with how fast kids learn and how much information they have at their fingertips.
