The MAST Institute now has a Moodle server which we will be offering to teachers. My question is, should we do Moodle 1.9 or 2.0? The default loaded Moodle 1.9 and I can't seem to see how to update…Continue

Hi Jerry,
I just joined the Teacher Vodcasting and Flipped Classroom Network and I am SUPER excited to have found you all (BTW, it was via the NPR article). I skimmed through your research proposal for a study on the effectiveness of the reversed classroom and was wondering whether you had published the results yet? I am very keen on finding studies that explore effectiveness on this approach.
As an aside, I am currently working as a product development manager working on a brand new online supplemental learning tool called Apperson Prep where we have created 77 learning videos (using Camtasia) for Algebra 1 (as well as animated videos) where each video has a complimentary set of high quality practice questions that provide students immediate feedback when they choose distractors and also allow them to earn points for correctly answering questions. We actually developed this application to help teachers have a progress monitoring tool that also provides instruction and I would be VERY interested in getting your feedback on our videos and how we can make our program a model for developing "flipping tools" for teachers who are overwhelmed by the idea of creating their own videos.
I would relish the opportunity to chat with you about what you're doing, your research and what you think about what we're doing. Let me know if you're game :-)

Is it too late to get a Moodle site from MAST? I thought I had replied to your message in June, but it didn't go through! Thanks!

I work for a State Department of CareerTech and oversee Math and Science teachers. I am a career HS Science teacher. I am always looking for new innovative ways to improve classroom management, curriculum, teaching and learning. I hope someday to be back in the classroom teaching. It's the best job ever.
Skip Larrington said… I teach chemistry and computer science. I will be using Jon and Aaron's vodcasts next year as part of my program. I will not be doing it in CS since I lecture so little anyhow in that class. This will be the first year I will be doing this, and plan on jumping in with both feet. Mastery learning and all - There is another teacher who is on the band wagon with me, and the two of us will be redesigning all our classes this summer. How about you? Are you finding this to be a success? Any pitfalls to watch out for?
Skip Larrington said… Hi Jerry -
I will be trying the flipped classroom for the first time this year - very excited about the idea. We are switching from a traditional schedule to a block schedule, and my predominant teaching style (lecture) will not work. So, this sounds like a tremendous idea. I also like the idea of mastery - we have too darn much extra credit in our system. Also, really like the idea of working with the students more one on one. That is the part of my job I enjoy the most. The thing I have to work on now is planning my schedule so I can give the kids targets for each week (which turns into 4 1/2 weeks, 9 weeks, semester, etc.)
Thanks for the welcome Jerry - how do you like the vodcasting? It appears you have been doing it for a while.

We're not currently using vodcasting or the flipped classroom. We will continue to explore blending learning but the flipped classroom is the first framework that I've heard about where online learning makes 'bigger picture' sense in mainstream schools like mine. With the bigger picture in place, the change to pedagogy becomes easier to implement and just makes good sense.
Heard about you from another delegate at morning tea at the Technology in K-12 Education National Congress held in Sydney last week. The last Keynote speaker was Alan November - he spoke about the concept in more detail.
