Thanks all. We do use embed codes and URLs to post videos from our You Tube channels. Per Craig's suggestion, I deleted any videos & podcasts that I did have posted on my Moodle page. It got me to the error message faster, but still not a solution. (and still no response from our Moodle IT guy)

Comment by Joe Liaw on January 25, 2013 at 2:14pm If embed isn't working for you, it's because your Site Admin has to enable it under the Security settings.
I like to use Vimeo for embedding because my school needs to block YouTube to preserve bandwidth.
Good luck!
Comment by Mark Heilbrunn on January 25, 2013 at 2:11pm You don't need to upload any videos to your moodle site to include them. Upload them to a site like youtube or schooltube. Here is what to do:

Thanks Craig! I'll ask about the files. I know that I have 2 videos, but they are only a few minutes long - no where near an hour, but it's worth checking out. Our site is hosted on a dedicated server in our district (my building actually). I'll forward your info to our admin to see if he can find anything or at least send me a copy of the moodledata info. I have numerous videos posted via embed codes and URLs, but that shouldn't matter.
I appreciate the help!

Comment by Craig Magtutu on January 24, 2013 at 5:42am Kristin - revisiting the size of your backup files... there must be a logical explanation for the enormous 1.2 GB backups. I would bet that a handful of actual videos files were uploaded into your courses at some point. As little as one hour of reasonable quality video can be nearly 1.2 GB on its own.
How is your Moodle site hosted? If you can get a file listing of the server, you might be able to investigate a bit... Moodle's data directory - usually called moodledata - is a common storage space for all of the courses hosted on the site. Anything uploaded goes into that folder. Unfortunately there are usually a gazillion subfolders inside of it. If I were hunting for big files, I would start by getting a list of everything in moodledata (including subfolder contents), and sorting by file size. I'm not sure if that's possible for you, but perhaps your admin can assist.
Hope that makes sense.

Comment by Matt Stockinger on January 10, 2013 at 8:05am Note: the equation typed with TeX will appear with subscripts displaying correctly. I tried to use the HTML tag in this post to display it here, but it isn't working on my screen.
Comment by Matt Stockinger on January 10, 2013 at 8:02am Hi Christina-
Have an admin install the WIRIS plugins (there are two packages: WIRIS quizzes, and the WIRIS filter plugin). The WIRIS site will talk about annual fees, but if you get the plugins through moodle.org, they're free. They allow you (and students) to create graphs within moodle activities or quizzes. The goodies go much further, but graphs are a great start.
See https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=filter_wiris and https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?id=26.
Whether or not you install WIRIS, you can use LaTeX in moodle to create nicely formatted items. See http://docs.moodle.org/24/en/Using_TeX_Notation. TeX has a learning curve, but if you start by learning just a few tricks you can go a long way. For example, 2H2 + O2 → 2H2O is entered in moodle by typing
%% 2H_2 + O_2 \rightarrow 2H_2O %%
You type the TeX above, and the actual equation appears to students. I find this faster to type than using gnarly Word shortcut keys. You can try it now; if it doesn't work, then an admin might have to enable some TeX stuff within Moodle. (It's built-in though).
