I am new to this whole concept, and I find it fascinating and full of promise. Right now, I am stuck on a few things. First, I would love to see a video of a flipped classroom in action,…Continue

I can't shake this nagging concern about reading development suffering due to student reliance on videos. Math and science are different beasts because they're not liberal arts. Social studies and…Continue

Comment by Jason Bretzmann on January 27, 2013 at 7:48pm Adam, If you're using twitter just go to the search box at the top and type in #flipclass and press enter. That will bring up a column that will just be flipclass comments until you change it back to your regular feed (Mondays at 7CST). If you're using tweetdeck (I recommend it) do the same search, but click Add a Column and you'll see the chat in that column. I'm flipping in AP Government, and would be happy to help in any way I can. Starting second semester of flipping tomorrow.
Comment by Adam Bellows on January 27, 2013 at 6:49pm I have been following a few of the dedicated "flippers" via twitter lately, and I am trying (sad to admit) how to follow or join the #flipclass chats. Can anyone show me how to jump on board with those? thanks!
Comment by Tricia Enterman on August 8, 2012 at 5:20pm Hi All!
I am new to this concept but am ready to take it and run as fast as I possibly can! I teach 8th Grade American Studies to 1877. Any and all help/links/comments are most welcome! I am so glad there is a place to ask questions and voice my concerns.
Comment by Jason Nowaczyk on July 6, 2012 at 11:42am Also I notice that those of you organizing your flipped classroom by state standards, have your districts talked yet about moving towards the common core standards that most states will be using now?
Comment by Jason Nowaczyk on July 6, 2012 at 11:41am Tara and Melissa,
I'm looking to flip my 8th grade social studies class as well 1860 to present. My biggest concern is finding meaningful and interesting activities for students to do during class time if they are getting the information at home. I also want to concentrate on using the current knowledge of the chapter and applying it to present day scenarios and applicable real world skills that they will need.
I would love to work with both of you to come up with some ideas of how this would look. I've filled out the community google doc or you can reach me at jnowaczyk@op97.org.
Comment by Tom Driscoll on July 2, 2012 at 9:48am Hey everyone,
I have created a Google Doc spreadsheet to serve as a "contact list" for all those socials studies teachers who are currently, or at least considering, flipping their class. Here is the link:
Social Studies Flipped Class Community
or direct address
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AkVIwE5hKSWtdHNLSEZIc0...
Please add your info and bookmark the doc so that you can contact and collaborate with others who are taking off with this approach!
I look forward to working with you all!
Comment by Melissa Prepster on July 1, 2012 at 6:22pm Hi Tara--
I actually have the first part of US History (1607-1877). What I'm focusing on right now is building the activities that students will do in class. Because of our state test, I've really got to build criticial thinking skills and have students spend a lot of time with primary sources. I will also be working in some experiential exercises from TCI (History Alive)
Comment by Tara Sladek-Maharg on July 1, 2012 at 4:05pm John V. Wood, I totally want to hear how your flipped AP class looks like and works out!!! Melissa Prepster, we're in the same 8th grade boat (I teach 1860 to the present). . .taking the lecture out of the class time completely gives us more time to get the students involved in activities.
I want to look into converting my narrated presentations into video or an easier format. (Many of my students didn't like that they would have to listen to the entire slide again if they missed one part.)
May the force be with us flippers!!!!!
Comment by Melissa Prepster on June 30, 2012 at 5:29pm Hi everyone! I teach 8th grade US History in Austin, Texas and will be attempting to flip my class this year. I look forward to reading your comments and being a part of this group.
Comment by John V. Wood on June 24, 2012 at 4:49pm I'm going to effort flipping my entire AP U.S. History class next semester. Wish me luck!
