One thing that helps me with online quizzing is that our book (Bianco and Canon) has a good interactive study site. I just have my students submit practice quizzes through the site, but chapter tests are still done in class. I think Moodle's testing modules are still too clunky. We haven't updated to the latest version of Moodle at our school yet. The newest version seems a lot better, and I'm sure I'll be using the testing stuff more in the future.

I like the conversation about videos because it helps us make sense of what the purpose of the videos is. There are lots of questions to ask: How much lecturing did I do before I flipped? What was the purpose of the lectures? To provide a pre-reading guide? To provide extension to the book's content? Both are legitimate uses of lecture. I use We The People with both Civics and AP students. My videos (YouTube channel Ziebarth101) so far have been overviews of key ideas in the lessons/chapters. Students who've said they like them said they help as a pre-reading guide or organizational tool. I guess it's best to make sure and test students on both lecture content/concepts and reading content/concepts if you expect them to do both.

Chris-
In moodle you can add extra questions, so for each objective I have 18-25 questions from my test bank. I was thinking of having the quizzes be 10 questions each so every time the student clicks begin new attempt, it should be a relatively new quiz. If you want to see my Moodle page let me know.

I'm reading Robert Caro's latest volume on LBJ. I'm only 200 pages in and there's lots of great examples for AP Govt which could be turned into mini case studies of 3-4 pages for students. I just have to figure out which parts to pull.

Creating tests that test what you need and are higher level is very time consuming. We use Blackboard, but it doesn't give data report that are useful. I started using eDoctrina last year. The only problem is that it costs $$. The good news is that my principal is willing to put up the $$.

I agree. I have to figure out how to do that Moodle program that randomizes the questions...

I also think students wait to see if we summarize the chapter for them, I know I am guilty of that one! If they know they are accountable in the end hopefully more of them will do it. For me, having the quizzes on Moodle and forcing them to score 75% or higher will prove to them they have to learn. Every time they re-take a quiz it will be a totally different quiz.

I used the video to enhance the reading, but I struggle with students not doing the reading until right before the test. I don't collect reading notes. Hopefully by moving to a Flipped Mastery model, students will do the readings. Any suggestions?

Frank, how did you assign reading for the book? Did videos enhance the reading or replace it?
